Jerry Garcia was the infamous founder of the Grateful Dead rock band. Garcia led a colorful life in the fast lane. Though he died in 1995, rock music fans still revere him.

    The Early Years

  1. Born on August 1, 1942 in San Francisco to a Spanish immigrant, Jerry Garcia started playing the guitar when he was 15 years old. He first played in The Mother McCree’s Uptown Jug Champions band in 1964. He joined the Army but received a poor conduct discharge.

    2. Grateful Dead

  2. Garcia formed the Grateful Dead band in 1965 with fellow musicians Bob Weir, Ron McKernan, Bill Kreutzmann and Phil Lesh. Garcia played with the band off and on until his last performance in 1995.

    3. Recordings with Other Groups

  3. Garcia made recordings with other famous groups such as Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young and Jefferson Airplane.

    4. Personal Life

  4. Garcia’s romantic life was complicated, including going back and forth between wives and lovers. He married three times and had four children. Garcia was an artist and drug addict. His addiction to heroin killed him.

    5. Fun Facts

  5. Jerry Garcia was an original hippie, along with Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and Janis Joplin. In July 1987, Ben and Jerry’s named one of its ice creams after Garcia–”Cherry Garcia.”
